“Colour represents the balance of light in a spectrum. White is the appearance of light which comes from something which emits electromagnetic radiation uniformly over the whole visible spectrum. When passed through a suitable medium, such as a glass prism or a drop of rain, white light can be spread into its rainbow-like spectrum of graded colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. This sequence of so-called spectral colours corresponds to a sequence of wavelengths of light.”

David Malin, Colours of the Stars, 1984
